What Are Bed Bugs?

Sometimes known by their Latin name Cimex Lecturalius, bed bugs are a small insect which feeds on blood. Despite this, they are not known to transmit diseases or pose any risk. They work by piercing the skin to access blood, resulting in skin reactions and itchy bumps.

It is thought that these insects are no more than 5 mm in length, oval in shape and a brown or reddish colour. Living in groups, in two months females can lay up to 500 eggs. These take anywhere between 6 and 17 days to hatch and require blood to survive. Once fully grown, bed bugs can go up to a year without feeding.

Common Signs

Luckily, there are a few ways that you can identify whether these pests are present. The most common sign is an unexplained rash on the skin. If you spot shells, black spots or blood spots then you may have an infestation.

These insects will only come out at night and spend their time in small cracks around the bed or mattress. A human’s body heat and carbon dioxide attract bed bugs, which is why it is important to treat an entire house.
